Poetry for the Curious: Writing your way

A course of five online Creative Writing for Wellbeing workshops
Tuesdays, 2.00 - 4.00 pm
22nd July - 19 August 2025

poetry (n) = a way of writing that places emphasis on features such as sound, imagery, metaphor, form, ambiguity and conciseness
curious (adj) = eager to learn or know something; strange, unusual

‘I don’t understand poetry.’ ‘I can’t write poetry.’ ‘What even is poetry, anyway?’
Poetry is a way of using language to write expressively, freely, figuratively and intensely. It cares less about conventions often associated with writing, like paragraphs, grammar, spelling and punctuation, and more about the sound of language, the pictures it can paint in the reader or listener’s mind, the shape it creates on the page. Poets write their way, and in doing so open up new ways of sharing their experience of being alive. I believe we can all write our way.
This five-week course is a gentle introduction for anyone who would like to deepen their understanding of poetry and explore writing poetry and/or poetic prose within the context of Creative Writing for Wellbeing. Each week, we’ll look at the themes and techniques in one or two published poems. Participants will have the opportunity to do a short piece of ’live’ expressive writing, which they can then share with the group if they wish to. Participants will reflect back to each writer what they heard and felt as they listened. There’s no literary critique. Instead this is a space to experiment, play and take emotional and creative risks with the way you express yourself in words on the page.

Max group size: 8 people £135 (There are two concessionary rate places available at £110 - please enquire.)
